Egypt boosts public transport with 529 new locally made buses

The Holding Company for Maritime and Land Transport and its subsidiaries (East Delta for Transport and Tourism, West and Central Delta for Transport and Tourism, Upper Egypt for Transport and Tourism (EGBUS), and Nile Freight Transport Company) announced that they have recently contracted with several Egyptian vehicle manufacturers from both the private and public sectors to supply the Holding Company's subsidiaries with buses and trucks. The initiative aims to modernize and renew the transport fleet, contribute to localizing vehicle manufacturing, enhance road efficiency between governorates, and provide modern and safe transportation options that meet citizens’ needs, delivering a sophisticated and advanced transport service.

The company added that the plan includes reinforcing the passenger transport fleet with 529 new buses and minibuses. These vehicles are equipped with the latest specifications to ensure comfort and safety, including comfortable seating, advanced air conditioning systems, group and individual screens, and smart device charging ports. Double-decker buses are also being introduced. Existing buses are being upgraded to meet the same standards, ensuring a consistent level of service across all routes operated by the Holding Company’s three passenger transport subsidiaries.

In parallel with fleet modernization, infrastructure and maintenance centers are being developed. Main and branch stations are being upgraded, central workshops fully equipped, and specialized branch workshops established for vehicle maintenance. A plan has been launched to upgrade 228 buses and to contract with authorized dealers to procure original spare parts, ensuring all vehicles meet uniform quality standards. The Holding Company is also providing refresher training courses for drivers under its subsidiaries as part of the “Aware Driver for a Safe Road” initiative. This program was implemented following directives from the Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and the Minister of Industry and Transport to train and qualify bus and heavy transport drivers, as part of the Ministry of Transport’s concerted efforts to ensure safe driving and enhance safety and security in the land transport sector.

The development of the fleet, infrastructure, operational systems, and human resources aims to provide the highest level of service for passengers. This includes fast digital booking via a unified application, electronic seat selection and payment, and full entertainment and comfort features within stations and buses. A monitoring system and control room track journey regularity and manage any emergencies efficiently, ensuring passengers a safer, more comfortable, and effective travel experience.

The statement emphasized that developing this sector is not merely an improvement in transportation but a strategic investment in comprehensive development. It is an integral part of Egypt Vision 2030, which positions modern transport as a cornerstone of the transition to a competitive and sustainable economy. The Ministry of Transport, represented by the Holding Company for Maritime and Land Transport, is restructuring passenger and freight transport systems across Egypt’s governorates, combining modern technology with local industry, and prioritizing citizens’ needs by providing transportation that reflects Egypt’s status and future ambitions.
