Omar Hisham Talaat: Golf drives tourism, real estate growth

Omar Hisham Talaat, President of the Egyptian Golf Federation (EGF), said yesterday Wednesday, that golf is set to become a major driver for Egypt’s tourism revenue, projecting tens of thousands of hotel nights from upcoming international tournaments.

Speaking at a press conference at Madinaty Golf Club, Omar Hisham Talaat stated that the 13. golf tournaments contribute 10,000 hotel nights.

The Egyptian Golf Federation reviewed its annual performance and unveiled a new strategic vision focused on institutional growth.

EGF President Omar Hisham Talaat highlighted the sport’s synergy with the real estate sector, a major contributor to Egypt’s GDP, noting that local developers are increasingly building world-class courses. He argued that leveraging Egypt’s historical ties to golf and its modern infrastructure would broaden the sport's domestic base while ensuring the financial sustainability of local clubs.

Reflecting on his leadership, Talaat noted that the Federation successfully transitioned from a financial deficit to a surplus within just seven months. He outlined plans to double revenues by diversifying income streams and securing private-sector sponsorships for upcoming international tournaments hosted in Egypt.

Minister of Youth and Sports Dr. Ashraf Sobhy backed these projections, stating that sports tourism has accounted for approximately 2 million hotel nights in Egypt since 2019. He highlighted the indirect economic returns, including visa fees, transport, and international promotion by participating athletes.

"Hosting sports championships provides direct income through sponsorship and advertising rights while stimulating the broader economy," Sobhy said.

The Minister expressed confidence in the Federation's ability to execute its expansion plans, which include the establishment of a dedicated commercial entity to manage professional tournaments and develop the sport.

Under this plan, the proposed company would spearhead a nationwide initiative to introduce "mini-golf" models at provincial youth centers as part of its corporate social responsibility mandate. Additionally, he anticipated the launch of a specialized Egyptian golf television channel to capitalize on rising demand for sponsorships and growing public interest in the sport.
