EgyptAir reroutes flights following shutdown of Greek airspace

Egypt’s national carrier, EgyptAir, announced on Sunday that it is implementing emergency flight path adjustments to bypass Greek airspace following a critical technical failure in Greece’s navigation systems.

The airline confirmed in a media statement that Greek authorities have enforced a total closure of their airspace until further notice due to a technical glitch affecting air traffic control and navigation monitoring systems.

The shutdown has triggered widespread disruptions for EgyptAir and other international carriers. Greece serves as a vital corridor for flights traveling between the Middle East, Europe, and the United States.

"This closure has impacted our flights and those of other airlines heading to Europe and the US," the company stated. "These routes rely heavily on Greek airspace as one of the primary axes for air navigation."

EgyptAir is currently working to establish alternative routes to avoid the affected area. However, the carrier warned that these adjustments may take time to implement due to the strategic complexity of the region's geography and the high volume of traffic typically handled by Greek controllers.

The airline confirmed it is taking the following steps: working closely with its Integrated Operations Control Center (IOCC) to track the situation in real-time, assessing the impact of these emergency changes on arrival and departure schedules, and communicating updates to passengers via sales channels, customer service centers in Egypt, and international branch offices.

The technical nature of the Greek system failure remains unclear, and no official timeline has been provided for the reopening of the airspace.
