El-Sherbiny inaugurates Daqmira water plant under Decent Life initiative

Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, and Governor of Kafr El-Sheikh, Major General Dr. Alaa Abdel-Moaty, inaugurated today the Daqmira Drinking Water Treatment Plant, with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters per day, in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate. The project is part of the second phase of the presidential initiative "Decent Life," aimed at developing rural Egyptian villages. Officials from the Ministry of Housing and the governorate also attended. The inauguration reflects the state’s ongoing efforts to improve drinking water services across the country.

Engineer El-Sherbiny expressed his pleasure at being in Kafr El-Sheikh for the inauguration, noting that the plant is part of the state’s plan to enhance services in the water and sanitation sector and upgrade infrastructure, in line with the vision of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. He thanked all parties involved for their efforts in delivering the project successfully, meeting citizens’ needs and expectations.

The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for ongoing projects in various governorates to achieve sustainable development and improve the quality of life. He emphasized the importance of regular maintenance to ensure service continuity, protect investments, and provide the best possible services.

Abdel-Moaty welcomed the Minister, noting that his visit reflects continuous coordination to support vital projects, especially in drinking water and sanitation. He said the new plant represents a major step toward improving service levels in several rural communities within the governorate.

The governor added that the plant will enhance water pressure and improve flow in the beneficiary areas. He confirmed that the governorate closely monitors project implementation according to timelines, ensuring the highest level of service for citizens. He expressed gratitude to the Minister for his ongoing support and for the strong cooperation between the ministry and the governorate, which has helped deliver numerous projects on the ground.

Following the inauguration, the Minister and the governor inspected all components of the plant and reviewed the progress of the "Decent Life" initiative projects in Kafr El-Sheikh under the National Authority for Drinking Water and Sanitation. They received a detailed briefing on the plant, which serves 65,000 residents in Daqmira Al-Saraya, Al-Ittihad Al-Shishini, Zahran, Al-Zawy, Al-Umda, Salam, and Ezbat Khamis, while also increasing water pressure in Al-Khadimiya Al-Ramla, Abu Kalboush, and Al-Thamanin. The project cost approximately EGP 150 million.

The plant includes a treatment facility and 1,900 meters of filtered water pipelines. Key components include a beach intake, raw water pump room, preparation pumps, submersible pumps, wooden storage containers, chlorine and acid tanks, backwash tanks, filtered water tanks, chlorine chamber, neutralization tower, main electrical control panel, generator, filtered water pump room, washwater collection pit, two submersible pumps, administrative building, chemical laboratory, and biological laboratory.

The plant uses ultrafiltration (UF) membrane technology without alum or pre-chlorination. Raw water is drawn through three treatment units, and the treated water is delivered to residents via two filtered water units, with a total discharge of 35,432 liters per hour.

The inauguration was attended by officials from the Holding Company for Drinking Water and Sanitation, the Regulatory Authority, the National Authority for Drinking Water and Sanitation, the Kafr El-Sheikh Water and Sanitation Company, and representatives from civil society.
