Badawi announces start of initial gas production at West Burullus field

Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, announced the start of initial gas production from the West Burullus field in the Mediterranean Sea. He said the first well has been connected to the national gas grid after production tests recorded results approaching 45 million cubic feet per day. The project is being implemented through a partnership between the petroleum sector and Cairn Energy.

He explained that work is underway to accelerate the connection of two additional wells. He said production is expected to reach 75 million cubic feet per day at the beginning of the new year.

Badawi pointed to the significant efforts made by the petroleum sector and its partners to gradually increase gas production and reduce the burden of import costs. He said this is being achieved by accelerating the development of discovered fields and advancing exploration and production programs. He added that investment incentives adopted by the Ministry have had a clear positive impact on production levels. He also praised the commitment of Cairn Energy and its growing cooperation in delivering the project.

It was noted that the West Burullus development and production project represents a model of integrated work and optimal use of the capabilities of Egyptian petroleum companies in implementing major projects. The work system included Modern Drilling, Marine Petroleum Services PMS, Petrojet, Enppi and Pico Petroleum Services. All these companies contributed to launching the field’s initial production. The gas is being transported to available processing facilities through Burullus Gas Company, which has enhanced the use of existing infrastructure and helped reduce costs.
