Irrigation Minister reviews German-funded Water System Rehab

Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, held a meeting to review progress on the "Water System Rehabilitation Project," financed by the German Development Bank (KfW).

The project aims to rehabilitate or replace water infrastructure within the West Beheira Irrigation Directorate. This includes modernizing irrigation systems in parts of the El-Khandak El-Sharqy and Sahel Morcos canals in Beheira Governorate. A feasibility study for modern irrigation in these areas is underway, with plans to establish a 200- to 300-feddan pilot area using advanced techniques based on the study's recommendations.

Additionally, the project involves protection work for the side slopes of specific sections of the Ismailia Canal in the East Delta, covering kilometers 77 to 106.

To date, the modern irrigation feasibility study for the target area is complete. Seven rehabilitation contracts for the Ismailia Canal have been awarded, and a tender for four contracts in Beheira Governorate has been issued. Two smaller canals have been selected for a drip irrigation project.

Sewilam emphasized the project's crucial role in addressing "hotspots" within the irrigation network. These areas require long-term, integrated rehabilitation of water structures, such as the Ismailia Canal and the West Delta canal network. This work encompasses upgrading water facilities and bridges as needed, conducting detailed modern irrigation studies, implementing pilot areas, and improving equipment for measuring water flow and quality, aligning with the ministry's plan to monitor water quality and quantity across its canal and drainage networks.
