Egypt, Myanmar sign MoU to boost agricultural cooperation

Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa Farouk, witnessed the signing of a joint Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, aimed at enhancing joint cooperation in the agricultural sector.

The MoU was signed by Engineer Moustafa El-Sayyad, Egypt's Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, and Dr. Ye Tint Tun, Director General of the Department of Agriculture at Myanmar’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation.

The cooperation aims to strengthen bilateral relations in various agricultural fields, with particular attention given to vital sectors including cotton, potatoes, agribusiness management, agricultural research and development, and modern biotechnology.

The agreement outlines several executive activities to translate this cooperation into reality, including the exchange of seeds and planting materials, expertise, advanced technologies, and technical information. It also covers the implementation of joint research, training, and the exchange of visits and study tours between experts from both sides, in addition to joint promotion of the production, manufacturing, and marketing of target agricultural commodities.

Minister Farouk underscored the strategic importance of the cooperation, calling it a significant step in deepening South-South cooperation and reflecting Egypt's commitment to enhancing its food security and developing its agricultural sector through fruitful international partnerships.

He explained that focusing on strategic crops like cotton and potatoes, alongside research and biotechnology, will directly contribute to technology transfer and the development of high-quality varieties, benefiting farmers and the national economy in both countries.

Farouk expressed his hope for mutual benefit from accumulated expertise in agribusiness management and applied research to ensure sustainable agricultural development and open new markets for agricultural products globally through joint marketing efforts. He stressed the importance of this cooperation as a starting point for joint efforts to achieve a qualitative leap in the production, manufacturing, and marketing of agricultural commodities, and to build the capacities of technical personnel in both Egypt and Myanmar.
