Housing Ministry in talks for local electromechanical equipment manufacturing

Deputy Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, Dr. Sayed Ismail, met with representatives of a global firm specializing in water infrastructure equipment to discuss boosting local manufacturing of critical components for drinking water and sanitation projects. The talks, which included ministry officials, focused on the domestic production of electromechanical equipment like meters, pumps, alarm systems, and control devices.

The initiative aligns with Egypt's broader strategy to localize industries and prioritize domestically produced goods for major infrastructure projects, aiming to increase overall local output.

Ismail underscored the significant positive impact of localizing the electromechanical equipment sector in Egypt, highlighting the Ministry of Housing's efforts to encourage this shift and facilitate technology transfer within ongoing projects. He affirmed the ministry's full support for local manufacturers in overcoming any challenges they might encounter.

The global company's officials expressed keen interest in manufacturing in Egypt, with ambitions to export to Central and East African nations, as well as Gulf states. They confirmed their product has met all standard specifications and received necessary certifications. The company plans to commence manufacturing within three months, aiming to produce approximately 250,000 meters annually with a local component exceeding 75%, offered at competitive prices in the Egyptian market.

Ismail also detailed the National Strategy for the Drinking Water and Sanitation Sector, which prioritizes private sector partnerships and support for local industrialization. The strategy also emphasizes seawater desalination and the reuse of treated wastewater as crucial non-traditional water sources.

Concluding the meeting, Ismail reiterated the ministry's unwavering support for its affiliated bodies across governorates and new cities. These efforts are part of a broader national drive to enhance water efficiency, diversify water sources, and promote local manufacturing to meet domestic demand and expand into export markets.
