Egypt hosts 4th Ministerial Retreat for African trade ministers

Ministers of trade from across Africa convened in Cairo today, Monday, for the fourth ministerial retreat on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), chaired by Egypt’s Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, Engineer Hassan El-Khatib. The meeting, which included AfCFTA Secretary-General Wamkele Mene and senior officials from member states, aims to accelerate economic integration.

In his opening remarks, Minister El-Khatib emphasized Africa’s rich history, resources, strategic location, and youthful population, supported by a clear political will for economic integration. He described the retreat as a critical step to translate these strengths into a unified economic reality that enhances the continent’s global competitiveness.

El-Khatib noted that the agenda focuses on navigating global geopolitical and economic shifts, accelerating the completion of a single African market for goods and services, and finalizing rules of origin. He stressed that these rules are fundamental to industrial integration and deepening value chains within Africa.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of digital transformation and electronic payments as key tools to facilitate intra-African trade and attract investment.

El-Khatib reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment, in its role as chair of the AfCFTA Ministerial Council, to support the continent's economic integration through its expertise and capabilities. He stated that Egypt believes African economic unity is the path to overcoming challenges and building a more stable and prosperous future.

Concluding his address, El-Khatib expressed confidence that the retreat would produce practical steps to fast-track the AfCFTA’s implementation and transform Africa into an influential global economic power. He said the outcomes of the meeting would be a new addition to the path of building a unified African market that meets the aspirations of its people.
