Jumia, Food Safety Authority to boost consumer trust in online food

Egypt's National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) is stepping up efforts to regulate food products sold online, with its chief meeting Thursday with executives from e-commerce giant Jumia.

NFSA chairman Dr. Tarek El-Houby met with Jumia Egypt CEO Abdel Latif Allama and other company officials to discuss how to ensure the safety and quality of food, supplements, and sports nutrition products sold on the platform.

El-Houby emphasized that e-commerce is a "modern channel for food circulation" that requires increased oversight and "innovative mechanisms to protect consumer health." He added that the NFSA is working with key market partners to create effective regulatory frameworks for online food sales.

For his part, Allama welcomed the collaboration, affirming Jumia's commitment to operating with the "highest safety and quality standards." He said the company would work to improve its internal monitoring to ensure Egyptian consumers receive safe and reliable food products.

The two sides agreed to form a joint working group to implement oversight measures and build consumer confidence in the online food market.
