The NTRA had earlier issued regulations governing the use of
mobile lines for promotional and commercial calls, ensuring that such services
are provided legitimately without infringing on citizens’ privacy. Since the
launch of these rules last year, around one million lines have subscribed to
the service, enabling citizens to see the caller’s name and number with each
promotional call and giving them the freedom to answer or ignore such calls.
The Authority urged individuals and companies still making
promotional calls via mobile or landline networks without subscribing to the
service to promptly contact their telecom operators, register their numbers and
promotional activity, and subscribe to the service to avoid disconnection of
devices used for nuisance calls.
Alongside these technical measures, the NTRA reaffirmed its
commitment to taking all legal measures against any company violating the law
or regulatory frameworks it has issued. Offending companies face penalties
including imprisonment and fines under Article 76 of Law No. 10 of 2003 on
telecommunications regulation and Article 25 of Law No. 175 of 2018 on
combating cybercrimes.
The NTRA stressed that multiple channels are available for
citizens to report violations related to nuisance calls received from unknown
or unregistered sources. These include mobile operators’ call centers, the
NTRA’s call center, the hotline (155), the My NTRA mobile application, and the
Authority’s dedicated reporting website.
