Tenant applications under Landlord Law open October 1st

Minister of Housing, Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, held a meeting to follow up on the implementation of the "Old Rent" Law. The law aims to regulate the relationship between landlords and tenants by establishing new rules, conditions, and procedures. The meeting was attended by ministry officials and included the CEO of the Social Housing and Mortgage Finance Fund, who joined via video conference.

Engineer El-Sherbiny announced that eligible tenants will be able to apply for alternative housing units starting on October 1st. As stipulated in Article 8 of the law, applications will be accepted for a period of three months. Citizens can apply through an online platform or at post offices nationwide, with the platform designed to help them submit their applications and complete all required procedures for the new units.

A presentation at the meeting detailed the procedures for providing these alternative units through the Social Housing and Mortgage Finance Fund. A specialized unit will be created to receive and register applications via the online platform and post offices during the three-month period. The goal is to compile a list of all applicants, classify and prioritize them, and determine the number of housing units needed for specific groups before the six-year deadline from the law's issuance expires.

The meeting also discussed the application process on the unified electronic platform, which will be as follows:

Create an electronic account to track the application status and complete any necessary documents,

Fill out the electronic application form, providing the required data. The form will require applicants to choose from specific categories.

For residential units, applications can be submitted by:

The original tenant who signed the rental agreement with the landlord.

The original tenant's spouse, if the contract was extended to them before the law came into effect.

Any tenant to whom the lease was extended.

For non-residential units, applications can be submitted by:

The original tenant.

Any tenant to whom the lease was extended.

The application will also require the applicant to specify the following:
