This aligns with the Ministry’s broader strategy to increase
reliance on renewable energy, optimize the use of conventional fuels, reduce
carbon emissions, and boost private sector involvement and investments in
implementing the National Energy Strategy. The goal is to achieve a 42% share
of clean energy in the energy mix by 2030 and 65% of total energy generation by
2040.
Esmat reviewed progress on the 1,000 MW Abidos 2 solar
energy project and its associated 600 MWh battery storage facility, currently
under development in Aswan Governorate, as well as the 500 MW Amunet 2 wind
energy project in Ras Shukheir.
They also discussed the implementation of the project for
two standalone energy storage stations, each with a capacity of 1,500 MWh. This
is the first energy storage project using the standalone storage system on the
unified electricity grid, currently being implemented in Aswan and Red Sea
governorates.
The meeting further explored ways to support increased
investments by AMEA Power in Egypt and reviewed several collaborative projects
within the partnership framework between the electricity sector and Al Nowais
Group. They also discussed plans to secure electricity supply and ensure grid
stability, particularly during peak hours.
Esmat highlighted the successful introduction of battery-based
energy storage systems in Egypt for the first time in recent months. Currently,
a 300 MWh storage facility operated by AMEA Power in Aswan contributes to the
grid’s capacity. He emphasized ongoing efforts to expand standalone storage
plants distributed as part of the plan to strengthen the electricity grid and
increase its capacity, including those being implemented by Al Nowais Group.
He underscored the importance of energy storage systems in
ensuring grid stability and continuous electricity supply amid growing reliance
on renewable energy. He added that the private sector is a key partner in
executing the energy strategy and is leading the implementation of projects
within the framework of this strategy. He praised the cooperation and
partnership with AMEA Power and commended the company’s adherence to project
timelines and schedules, which paves the way for further joint initiatives.
