Amawi stresses business role in customs modernization

Ahmed Amawi, Head of the Egyptian Customs Authority, affirmed that the business community is a key partner in driving reforms aimed at enhancing customs performance. He stated that the newly introduced customs facilitation measures represent a significant step by the Minister of Finance to restore investor confidence, both local and international, supporting smoother trade flows and fostering a more attractive and competitive investment climate.

Amawi, speaking at a conference organized by the Egyptian-Lebanese Businessmen Association, highlighted efforts to simplify and accelerate customs procedures and reduce average clearance times. The pre-clearance system has been fully implemented at all logistics centers, and a comprehensive risk management system is currently being piloted to expedite the clearance of low-risk shipments. Automated classification and valuation systems have also been introduced to ensure accurate tariff coding, enhance valuation precision, and minimize disputes by reducing human involvement.

He noted the Minister of Finance’s commitment to building a genuine partnership with the business sector to stimulate investment. Direct engagement with customs stakeholders continues to address procedural challenges through practical solutions and the adoption of constructive proposals from the customs community that contribute to faster cargo clearance.

He added that the current phase presents strong opportunities for effective and constructive cooperation between the Customs Authority and the private sector, with a shared goal of enhancing the competitiveness of the Egyptian economy.
