Egypt extends shop, restaurant hours for Ramadan

Local Development and Environment Minister Manal Awad announced Monday that operating hours for shops, malls, and restaurants will be extended until 2:00 am during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan and the Eid El-Fitr holiday.

The decision, issued by the Higher Committee for Public Shop Licensing, aims to accommodate citizens' needs during the festive season while balancing economic activity with public order.

Under the new regulations, which take effect this Wednesday, restaurants and cafes are permitted to continue takeaway and home delivery services 24 hours a day. Workshops located within residential areas must close by 10:00 pm, though those on highways and at petrol stations are exempt.

She added that the decision ensures a suitable atmosphere for citizens during the holy month, noting that essential services, including supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies, and wholesale fruit and vegetable markets, will remain exempt from the closing restrictions to ensure the continuous supply of basic goods.

The Minister directed provincial authorities to form monitoring committees to ensure compliance. Local officials have been instructed to take legal action against business owners who violate the temporary schedule, which will remain in place until the end of the Eid El-Fitr holidays.
