Housing Minister follows up on seawater desalination plants

Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, held a meeting to follow up on the status of seawater desalination plants on the Northwest Coast and to address the water needs of this area through the implementation of new plants or expansions of existing plants. The meeting was attended by officials from the Ministry of Housing, the Regulatory Authority for Drinking Water and Wastewater, the Holding Company for Drinking Water and Wastewater, the Executive Authority for Drinking Water and Wastewater, the New Urban Communities Authority, and the Cairo Wastewater Company.

The meeting addressed the strategic plan for seawater desalination until 2050, in addition to reviewing water needs in the service areas of Northwest Coast projects, including the Bagoush desalination plant serving the Shams El-Hekma area, the East Matruh desalination plant serving Marsa Matruh, and the New Alamein desalination plant serving New Alamein City. The capacity of each plant was reviewed, along with proposals for expansion to accommodate the growing demand.

El-Sherbiny directed that all aspects related to this file be studied, along with the development of a work plan and a specific timeline for the implementation of all work. He also directed that a comprehensive report detailing each phase of the work be developed, including the current and future water needs of each region and the capacities required to meet these needs.

He also reviewed the status of the project to rehabilitate and upgrade the Robbiki treatment plant, which aims to increase its capacity from 8,000 m³/day to 24,000 m³/day—approximately three times the current capacity. The project's implementation period will extend to 24 months, along with a 33 km-long discharge line.

The Minister reviewed all ongoing work on the project, its components, implementation rates, and the timeline for completing the project phases. He listened to an explanation of the work mechanism at the current plant, following the expansion and upgrading of its efficiency, the ongoing restoration work on the plant's components, the new facilities, the added refineries and basins, and the ongoing testing of all components. He directed the need to adhere to the scheduled completion dates for the project and to prepare a monthly report on the status of the projects being implemented.
