The Minister emphasized that the arrival of this new vessel is crucial for securing natural gas supplies for power plants this summer. This initiative is part of a broader government effort to stabilize the electricity grid. He noted that obtaining this second regasification vessel directly resulted from discussions with the German government in Cairo and Berlin during his March visit, where they explored leasing the vessel for operation in Egypt.
Minister Badawi explained that the Ministry of Petroleum and
Mineral Resources continues to enhance its infrastructure for receiving
imported LNG. This new vessel now serves as a second regasification ship,
complementing the one already operating at the SUMED port in Ain Sokhna.
Additionally, EGAS has contracted two more vessels, which will arrive
sequentially, bringing the total to four. This expansion will significantly improve
the efficiency and flexibility of the domestic natural gas supply system,
enabling it to better meet increasing demand, especially during the summer.
The Minister also emphasized the ongoing coordination and integrated
efforts among the Ministries of Petroleum and Electricity and all relevant
entities to ensure sustainable and stable electricity supplies.
Following the arrival of the vessel, which boasts a storage capacity of 174,000 cubic meters of gas, the Minister conducted an inspection tour aboard the ship. He was accompanied by a delegation including Engineer Yassin Mohamed, Executive Managing Director of EGAS, Engineer Moataz Atef, Undersecretary for the Minister's Office, Technical Office, and Official Spokesperson, Dr. Khaled El-Badry, Undersecretary for Projects, Major General Hossam Nabil, Head of the Central Administration for Petroleum Sector Security, Engineer Walid Lotfy, Chairman of Petrojet, and Engineer Wael Lotfy, Chairman of Enppi. Upon his arrival at the port, the Minister was welcomed by Rear Admiral Ehab Salah, Head of the Alexandria Port Authority, and Rear Admiral Abdelkader Darwish, Head of the Egyptian Multi-Purpose Terminals Company.
