Egypt opens Vietnamese market to fresh onions, garlic exports

Alaa Farouk, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, announced that Egypt has officially succeeded in opening the Vietnamese market to its exports of fresh onions and fresh garlic.

The move comes as part of the ministry’s strategy to enhance access for Egyptian agricultural exports to Asian markets.

The announcement comes ahead of the launch of the new export season and within the framework of implementing the directives of the political leadership to open new international markets and support Egyptian farmers and exporters.

The Minister of Agriculture received a joint report from Ahmed Odham, Head of the Agricultural Services and Follow-up Sector, and Mohamed El-Mansi, Head of the Central Administration for Agricultural Quarantine. The report reviewed the efforts undertaken by the Egyptian Agricultural Quarantine and the technical coordination that continued for more than two years in cooperation with the Egyptian Embassy in Hanoi. These discussions resulted in the Vietnamese side approving Egypt’s phytosanitary regulations.

El-Mansi said that Technical Circular No. 4 of 2026 was issued and circulated to inspectors and exporters to ensure compliance with all required international standards. He noted that Egypt aims, through opening the Vietnamese market, to increase exports of both crops, given the strong reputation of Egyptian products and their compliance with global quality specifications.

According to official data released by the Agricultural Quarantine, global demand for Egyptian garlic and onion crops is rising. By the end of 2025, Egypt’s exports reached about 288,000 tonnes of fresh onions and 45,000 tonnes of fresh garlic to a wide range of countries worldwide.
