Egypt launches National Strategy for Urban Development and Green Building

Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, launched the National Strategy for Sustainable Urban Development and Green Building at a ceremony in Cairo, marking a major step in the country's transition to a green economy.

The launch event was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Justice Counselor Adnan Fangary, Minister of Culture Dr. Ahmed Hanou, Minister of Public Business Sector Engineer Mohamed Shimi, and the Governors of Cairo and Giza, Dr. Ibrahim Saber and Adel El-Naggar, respectively.

El-Sherbiny hailed the launch as a nationally significant event that represents a foundational pillar for the state's green transition and the re-formulation of the planning and construction system on more efficient and sustainable bases, in line with directives from the political leadership.

The Minister added that the strategy is one of the core pillars for building the New Republic, noting that it follows President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's launch of its roadmap during the 12th session of the World Urban Forum in Cairo in November 2024.

El-Sherbiny stressed that in the face of unprecedented global challenges, including environmental and climate crises, a new approach to urban planning, management of urbanization, and natural resource utilization is required. He said that with growing urbanization and demand for housing and services, it has become essential to develop an urban model that promotes the rational use of energy and water, limits carbon emissions, and ensures a high quality of life for current and future generations.

He credited the ambitious national project to the unlimited support of President Sisi, who has made sustainability and the green transition a high priority.

The Minister emphasized that green urbanization and construction are no longer just an environmental trend but a key driver for a more efficient and sustainable urban development that benefits the state, society, and investors alike. He explained that applying green building standards yields economic returns for both users and real estate developers in the short and long term.

He highlighted that these standards can lead to a tangible reduction in operating and maintenance costs, a reduction in water consumption by up to 33 percent, and a reduction in energy consumption by up to 40 percent, thereby improving the quality of life and the efficiency of resource use.
