Egypt plans global grain hub in Suez Canal Economic Zone

Prime Minister Dr. Moustafa Madbouly chaired a meeting today, Tuesday, to follow up on the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to establish a global center for grain storage, supply, and trade.

At the outset of the meeting, Madbouly emphasized President El-Sisi's directives to all relevant ministries and state agencies to work towards establishing a global logistics hub for grains in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone).

"Various state entities have submitted proposals for cooperation in establishing this center, which the state highly anticipates due to its immense importance," Madbouly said.

The Prime Minister highlighted the SCZone's high logistical advantages and capabilities and its existing trade relations with numerous African nations. He stressed the need for a strong and attractive investment portfolio to showcase the project's opportunities, competitive advantages, and expected returns, aiming to leverage Egypt's geographical position as a global corridor for grains.

The meeting was attended by key ministers, including Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk, Supply and Internal Trade Minister Sherif Farouk, and Agriculture and Land Reclamation Minister Alaa Farouk, along with other senior officials.

Minister of Supply and Internal Trade affirmed that Egypt would seek international expertise and coordinate with relevant ministries and potential international partners on the initiative. He noted that the area already possesses existing storage capacity and available land for further development.

Agriculture Minister Farouk added that the logistics zone would encompass diverse activities and bring numerous benefits.

Major General Khaled Ahmed Salah, representing the Egypt Future for Sustainable Development Agency, confirmed that studies are underway for the grain hub, which is part of a broader proposal for a logistics zone for grains and oils.

Mohamed Aboul Dahab, Investment Director at the Suez Canal Economic Zone Authority, presented studies on the logistics center, noting the availability of grain storage silos from a national project and existing loading/unloading points in key ports like Dekheila, Alexandria, Damietta, and West Port Said.

Aboul Dahab also revealed a concept paper developed in English to promote the project and outlined plans to attract industries for silo manufacturing, engage the private sector in storage and handling, and market the project internationally.

Madbouly concluded the meeting by directing the formation of a working group, including representatives from relevant ministries and the Egypt Future for Sustainable Development Agency. This group is tasked with expediting the feasibility study and preparing a comprehensive file on investment opportunities to attract further international partners to the promising zone.
