Egypt launches EGP 40.3B Ramadan social protection package

Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk on Sunday announced a new EGP 40.3 billion social protection package to support low-income groups ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.

The measures, ordered by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, were unveiled during a press conference held by Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly and Minister for Information Diaa Rashwan.

Kouchouk said the package includes direct cash assistance to improve living conditions for vulnerable families during Ramadan and Eid El-Fitr.

Key financial allocations include EGP 8 billion to provide a EGP 400 monthly bonus in March and April 2026 for 10 million families on food subsidy cards, in addition to EGP 4 billion for a one-time EGP 400 grant for 5.2 million families enrolled in the Takaful and Karama program.

Allocations include also EGP 300 grants for 45,000 beneficiaries of child pensions and rural female health leaders.

On healthcare, the Minister allocated EGP 3 billion to clear surgical waiting lists and another EGP 3 billion for state-funded medical treatment for the uninsured between February and June 2026.

Additionally, EGP 3.3 billion will be used to expedite the rollout of the Universal Health Insurance system in Minya governorate starting April 1, with the state covering premiums for those unable to pay.

The package also earmarks 15 billion pounds for the Decent Life (Hayah Karima) initiative to finalize approximately 1,000 rural development projects.

To support the agricultural sector, the government raised the local wheat procurement price for the 2026 season to EGP 2,350 per ardeb, up from EGP 2,200, at a total cost of EGP 4 billion.
