Damietta Port container terminal superstructure works contract signing

Transport Minister Engineer Kamal El-Wazir witnessed the signing of a contract for the superstructure works of the “Hayah Masr 1” container terminal project at Damietta Port.

The agreement involves Damietta Alliance for Container Terminals (Hapag-Lloyd, Eurogate Germany, Contship Italy) - the operator of the Hayah Masr 1 terminal - and Modern Engineering Pioneers company.

This contract finalizes the construction of the Hayah Masr 1 terminal, with its infrastructure already 100% complete. The terminal has a capacity of a 3.5 million TEU, with quay lengths of 1,970 meters, and a depth of 18 meters.

The contract was signed by President of Damietta Alliance Company Juan Pablo, and President of Rowad Company Mohamed Mehleb. The ceremony was attended by Tom Akileman, President of Eurogate International Company, and Major General Ahmed Hawash, President of Damietta Port Authority.

The minister emphasized the urgency of starting construction on the superstructure works to ensure the terminal's timely opening. He highlighted the project's significance in boosting Damietta Port's container handling capacity by 3.5 million TEU. The Minister noted that this project aligns with the ministry's development of the integrated Tanta-Mansoura-Damietta logistics corridor. This corridor encompasses the Tanta logistics zone, the railway line connecting the cities, the dry port in New Damietta, and Damietta Port itself.

He emphasized that the corridor, with Damietta Port as a key component, will position the port as a global hub for transit trade, supporting the state's goal of transforming Egypt into a regional center for transport, logistics, and transit trade, as outlined in presidential directives.

El-Wazir further noted that this project aligns with the ministry's plan to attract leading global shipping line operators like Eurogate, Contship, and Hapag-Lloyd to invest in the Egyptian ports, participate in port operations and maximize cooperation with the international and local private sector.
