Ministry of Supply launches new discounted market hub in Cairo

Dr. Sherif Farouk, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, alongside Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, and Dr. Ibrahim Saber, Governor of Cairo, officially inaugurated a large-scale discount market for household essentials and food commodities today, Tuesday.

Located at the New Sabteya Station near Ramses Square in Cairo, the market is part of a national strategy to expand commodity outlets, provide essential goods at affordable prices, and eliminate unnecessary middleman costs.

The market features 106 exhibitors representing a strategic mix of public and private entities, including The Holding Company for Food Industries, The Egyptian Company for Distribution and Services, The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (MSMEDA), The Poultry Producers Union, The Rotary Charity Club and various private sector firms.

The initiative was organized in direct coordination with the Cairo Chamber of Commerce to ensure a wide variety of high-quality products.

Dr. Sherif Farouk, Minister of Supply, emphasized that these markets are a vital tool for price stabilization. "By offering meat, poultry, vegetables, fruits, and basic staples directly from the producer to the consumer, we effectively balance market prices and alleviate the financial burden on Egyptian families," the Minister stated.

He further noted that the Sabteya market will remain open for one week, serving as a pilot for a broader plan to establish similar hubs across all governorates in cooperation with the private sector.

Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development, highlighted the government’s commitment to reaching citizens in high-density residential areas. She noted that the Ministry is working closely with governors to ensure significant discounts are maintained, particularly for essential food items.

Governor Ibrahim Saber added that the location at Ramses Square was strategically chosen to be accessible to the largest possible segment of the population, praising the inter-ministerial coordination that made the project possible.
