The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) affirmed that banks never
request detailed information about customer accounts, whether through phone
calls, social media pages, or messages.
The statement highlighted that, under the Central Bank Law
No. 194 of 2020, Article 140 stipulates that all customer data, accounts,
deposits, safekeeping, and safe deposit boxes in banks, as well as related transactions,
are confidential. Access to or disclosure of such information, directly or
indirectly, is permitted only with written authorization from the account
holder, depositor, trustee, or safe deposit box owner, or their heirs,
legatees, legal representative, or agent, or pursuant to a court order or
arbitration ruling.
The CBE urged all banking sector customers not to provide
any account information over the phone to anyone, in order to avoid falling
victim to fraud attempts targeting personal and financial data. Customers are
advised to always use official banking channels for their transactions.
