Sisi discusses New Delta project, water management

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met Monday with Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Dr. Hani Sewilam and several top military and government officials to review the status of the New Delta national agricultural project and efforts to optimize water usage.

The meeting included Major General Amir Sayed Ahmed, Presidential Adviser for Urban Planning; Major General Walid Mohamed Aref, Head of the Armed Forces Engineering Authority; and Colonel Dr. Bahaa al-Ghannam, Executive Director of the "Future of Egypt for Sustainable Development" Authority.

Presidential Spokesman Mohamed El-Shenawy said the talks focused on the executive progress of the New Delta project, maximizing water resource benefits, and enhancing water use efficiency to support national agricultural production schemes. Discussions specifically covered the status of the project's northern source for irrigation water.

Sisi stressed the necessity of closely monitoring agricultural projects, particularly the New Delta, through close cooperation between the government and the Future of Egypt Authority. He emphasized that this effort aims to boost the agricultural sector to achieve food security in strategic crops. The President also called for promoting partnership with the private sector in agricultural infrastructure and providing space for it to accelerate progress in these projects.

Sewilam reviewed the progress of the canal conveying agricultural drainage water to the New Delta purification plant. This project, which includes 12 pumping stations and a 166-km conveyance path, has reached an 85% completion rate.

Sisi directed officials to continue work on the conveyance path and its pumping stations according to the set timelines. He also stressed the continuation of the national project to regulate the Nile and remove all encroachments on the river's course.

Al-Ghannam, the Executive Director of the Future of Egypt Authority, presented the authority's plan to launch new land reclamation projects as part of the comprehensive agricultural development system. These include new reclamation efforts in the Kafra area and along the Dakhla-Al-Owaynat road, which are expected to be offered at the beginning of next year. He also revealed that studies are underway for an agricultural project in Senegal, in addition to others in various African nations.
