El Nasr Motors tests electric bus at Giza Pyramids

Egypt’s state-owned El Nasr Automotive Manufacturing Company has deployed its first locally-made electric bus for field trials at the Giza Pyramids, the government announced on Thursday.

The "Nasr EV" has joined the Orascom Pyramids fleet to transport tourists around the ancient site, marking a major milestone in Egypt’s efforts to decarbonize its transport sector and revive its national automotive industry.

The Cabinet's media center stated that the fully electric bus produces zero carbon emissions, a move designed to protect the environmental integrity of archaeological zones. The vehicle features high-end interior finishes and climate control, in addition to advanced internal and external surveillance camera systems. The EV joins El Nasr’s existing portfolio, which includes the "Nasr Sky" tourist coach and the "Nasr Star" minibus.

Once the cornerstone of Middle Eastern car manufacturing, El Nasr, subsidiary of the Metallurgical Industries Holding Company, is currently finalizing its production lines to begin mass manufacturing of electric buses.

The Ministry of Public Business Sector aims for the production to meet "international quality and technology standards," focusing on increasing local components to reduce reliance on imports.

The project is a pillar of Egypt’s Vision 2030 strategy, which seeks to transition the national economy toward a green model through private-sector partnerships.

By localizing the manufacture of modern transport, the government aims to project a civilized image to international visitors while fostering a competitive domestic manufacturing hub. The trial at the Pyramids serves as a high-profile proof of concept for the durability and efficiency of the new Egyptian-made electric vehicles.
