Shimi reviews Egypt’s green ammonia project

Engineer Mohamed Shimi, Minister of Public Business Sector, received a delegation from Envision Energy, a leading Chinese green technology company, led by Frank Yu, Vice President, and Benchmark Power International, led by Dr. Ahmed Bahgat, Chairman of the Board, at the Ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital. The meeting was attended by Chemist Saad Helal, Managing Director of the Holding Company for Chemical Industries, and Engineer Diaa Taher, Managing Director of El Nasr Fertilizers Company.

The meeting reviewed the progress of the project to establish a green ammonia production plant at El Nasr Fertilizers Company, a subsidiary of the Holding Company for Chemical Industries, in Ataqa, Suez Governorate. Discussions also covered the steps and procedures for the partnership between El Nasr Fertilizers Company and the consortium of Benchmark Power International (the main developer) and Envision Energy (the technical expert), through the establishment of a joint company for the eco-friendly green ammonia project.

The project marks a major milestone in Egypt’s efforts to achieve sustainable development goals and expand green energy exports. It has been approved as a free zone project fully powered by clean energy, targeting an annual production of 420,000 tons in its first phase, most of which will be exported.

Shimi emphasized that the project represents a key step in Egypt’s transition toward a green economy and emissions reduction, reinforcing the country’s position on the global clean energy map.

He added that relying on renewable energy sources demonstrates Egypt’s commitment to building a sustainable energy ecosystem, enhancing energy security, and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. It also opens new export opportunities, reflecting Egypt’s potential as a regional hub for renewable energy. The participation of leading international partners, he noted, highlights global investor confidence in Egypt’s investment climate.

Shimi affirmed that the Ministry places strong emphasis on partnership with the private sector as a key pillar of its strategic vision. Such partnerships enhance the capabilities of affiliated companies, open new investment horizons, attract both local and foreign investments, and bring the latest global technologies. They also promote cooperation with leading international entities in joint projects that boost productivity, enhance competitiveness, localize technology, and create added value for the national economy.
