Ismail discusses cooperation with Chinese company in water desalination

Dr. Sayed Ismail, Deputy Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, met with a delegation from Jiangsu Fenghai, a leading Chinese company in water desalination and new energy. The meeting discussed potential areas of cooperation and followed up on Prime Minister Dr. Moustafa Madbouly’s recent visit to China, during which he invited Chinese investors to explore opportunities in several key sectors in Egypt. The meeting was attended by the Ministry’s Advisor for Follow-up, Projects and Utilities, vice presidents of the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater, and representatives from the Project Management Unit at the Ministry of Housing.

Ismail welcomed Jiangsu Fenghai delegation and emphasized the strategic importance of seawater desalination as a key pillar in diversifying water resources and strengthening water security. He highlighted the government’s focus on localizing the production of electromechanical equipment used in desalination plants, noting that these priorities are at the forefront of Egypt’s national agenda.

Officials from the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater gave a presentation on Egypt’s desalination program. The total production capacity of existing and ongoing plants has reached around 1.7 million cubic meters per day. The presentation also outlined plans to expand production to about 10 million cubic meters per day through new projects to be implemented under public-private partnership models.

Jiangsu Fenghai delegation commended Egypt’s efforts, led by the Ministry of Housing, in developing national infrastructure. They expressed interest in contributing to the growth of the desalination sector and establishing manufacturing operations in the Egyptian market.

Dr. Ismail affirmed that the ministry’s efforts align with the State Ownership Policy Document and the Utilities Sector Strategy. He said the ministry is working to localize modern desalination technologies and electromechanical equipment while promoting private sector participation in the construction, operation and maintenance of desalination plants.
