Hisham: ON Sport, United Sports partnership promotes Egyptian tourism via Golf

Golf Federation President Omar Hisham Talaat affirmed that the return of the Egyptian Open after a 15-year continuous hiatus marks a pivotal moment in the modern history of Egyptian golf. He noted that reviving the event preserves its status as the oldest professional golf championship in the Middle East and one of the world’s most prestigious tournaments.

The 104-year-old championship constitutes an essential part of Egypt's sports history.

The 2025 edition of the tournament officially launched today, Wednesday, at Madinaty Golf Club and will run until Saturday. The competition features an unprecedented participation of approximately 115 players representing 35 countries from around the world.

Omar Hisham said that this tournament is part of a series of international championships that the federation has organized so far, starting with the prestigious Egypt International Amateur Championship at Dreamland Golf Course, followed by the Egypt International Junior and Ladies Championship at New Giza Golf Course. Currently, the Egyptian International Open for Professionals is underway.

Hisham highlighted that the federation will cap the series next week with the inaugural event of the Egypt Golf Tour: the Red Sea International Professional Championship at Sokhna Golf Club.

He proudly noted that the federation successfully organized five major regional and international championships before the end of his first year in office as he took office at the end of last November.

He stated that the board of directors was keen to hold these tournaments on different courses to promote Egyptian golf tourism and highlight the diversity of Egyptian courses and the availability of capabilities to organise and host major international and world championships.

Omar Hisham explained that the current period is witnessing a significant expansion in partnerships with major entities across various sectors, especially media. He cited the cooperation with the On Sport channel network, under the sponsorship of the United Sports company.

Hisham said this partnership aims to maximize opportunities to promote tourism in Egypt generally through the gateway of golf, by broadcasting these major tournaments live. He added that the broadcasts showcase Egypt’s numerous golf courses, introduce viewers to the country's diverse tourist destinations, and demonstrate Egypt's potential and ability to impress.

He concluded that this strategy establishes Egypt's position as a leading tourist destination that offers visitors from abroad diverse programs that may be unmatched in other countries, where they can enjoy golf, history, cultural, entertainment, and beach tourism.

The President of the Egyptian Golf Federation confirmed that prioritizing the media aspect is part of the board's strategy to promote and popularize the game. He noted a strong commitment to broadcasting recent events live across various digital platforms to achieve internal and external visibility.

This goal, he said, has been achieved, with viewership approaching one million views in just two weeks, confirming that golf is now under the spotlight and enjoys public and media interest from outside the game's community.

Omar Hisham Talaat added that the federation’s focus on promotion goes hand in hand with the sporting aspect, which includes developing local players, enhancing their abilities, and helping them reach global levels.

He explained that the increased number of international and world championships in Egypt will provide Egyptian players with double the opportunity for strong exposure to foreign professional players, which will automatically raise their aspirations to reach those distinguished levels.

Talaat noted that the federation is focused on making participation accessible to all categories: the national team (which has priority), professional players, and outstanding juniors.

He highlighted that the current Egypt International Open tournament features three players under 18 among the 10 Egyptian participants, Aley El Din Salama, Abdelrahman El Defrawy, and Omar Yossry, who would not have had the opportunity to compete in such an event had it not been held in Egypt.
