Egypt, Spain sign commercial contracts for metro train maintenance

Lieutenant General Kamel Al-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, witnessed the signing of three contracts between the National Authority for Tunnels and the Spanish company CAF. These contracts include a maintenance agreement for 23 trains on the first metro line and two contracts for the modernization, rehabilitation, and maintenance of 39 trains on the second metro line.

The contract for the modernization of 39 trains on the second metro line was signed by Dr. Tarek Goueili, Chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels; Montalvo Urtiz, CEO of CAF Integrated Systems Solutions; and Hany El-Leithy, as the company’s legal representative. The maintenance contract for 23 trains on the first line and 39 trains on the second line was signed by Dr. Tarek Goueili; Ibon Garcia-Neel, CEO of CAF Services; and Hany El-Leithy, as the company’s legal representative.

The Minister affirmed that this signing is part of the state’s comprehensive plan to develop the Greater Cairo Metro network. The contracts cover the rehabilitation and maintenance of 39 trains on the second line, enhancing the efficiency of trains operating since the 1990s by updating traction, control, air conditioning, and ventilation systems. This is expected to extend the trains’ operational lifespan by at least 20 additional years.

Additionally, a 10-year comprehensive maintenance program will be implemented for 62 trains across the first and second metro lines. The contract aims to ensure operational sustainability, maximize reliability and quality, and reduce daily breakdowns. Rehabilitation, maintenance, and overhaul work will be carried out in Egypt at the Torah and Shubra workshops on the first and second lines, with over 95% participation by Egyptian labor. All works will be funded from the budget of the National Authority for Tunnels in Egyptian pounds.
