Egypt to host 21st APUA Conference in September

In line with Egypt's commitment to supporting partnerships and cooperation with African nations, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Dr. Mahmoud Esmat met with Abel Tella, Director General of the Association of Power Utilities of Africa (APUA), and his accompanying delegation. The meeting, held at the ministry's headquarters in the New Administrative Capital and attended by Gaber Dessouky, head of the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company, focused on preparations for the 21st APUA General Conference.

The conference, which will be hosted by Egypt in Cairo from September 26 to October 3, 2025, is being held under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Moustafa Madbouly.

Egypt's selection as the host country underscores the confidence of the African and international community in its ability to lead the conversation on the continent's energy future. The conference coincides with the 55th anniversary of APUA's founding and will mark the transition of the association's leadership from Senegal to Egypt. This leadership role is a result of Egypt's previous efforts, including its chairmanship of the Scientific Committee and its service as APUA's First Vice President. These positions underscore Egypt's influential role in shaping Africa's energy future and its commitment to leveraging its extensive experience and strong infrastructure for the benefit of the continent.

The conference is being organized in collaboration with the African Development Bank and the APUA secretariat. It is expected to attract approximately 1,500 participants, including ministers of electricity and energy from member states, heads of African electricity companies, policymakers, senior officials, experts, regional and international development partners, and representatives from local and global companies within the sector.

Dr. Esmat said hosting the conference shows the international community's trust in Egypt and recognizes its leading role in supporting Africa's energy sector. He described the event as a crucial platform for developing a shared vision that aligns with global energy trends. The minister also reiterated Egypt's commitment to Africa's energy transition, citing the country's National Energy Strategy, which aims to boost renewable energy's share of total generation to 42% by 2030 and 65% by 2040.

The conference, themed "Challenges of Energy Transition," will address several key topics, including energy transition, reforms in the energy sector, governance and sustainability for African power companies, and the future of the African energy sector.

The conference will focus on discussing challenges and opportunities in Africa's energy sector. It aims to promote public-private partnerships to boost investment in renewable energy projects and will showcase the latest technologies and innovative solutions for improving the efficiency of power utilities. The program also features several high-level meetings and forums.
