Japan’s ambassador inspects Cairo metro line 4 construction

Japan’s Ambassador to Cairo, Fumio Iwai, visited the construction site of Cairo Metro Line 4. The project is being implemented with support from Japan’s Official Development Assistance. The visit included locations from the first phase, including the train depot and the fifth station.

The Japanese Embassy confirmed that the new metro line extends for 19 kilometers. It connects the Giza tourist area, home to the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Pyramids, with downtown Cairo. The project is expected to ease traffic congestion and reduce air pollution in Giza. An eastward extension is currently under review.

Egypt and Japan have shared a strong railway partnership for nearly 60 years. Japanese companies have supplied Alexandria with trams and delivered around 1,600 railcars to Egypt. Many of these cars are still operational.

Japan’s earlier contributions laid the groundwork for broader support to Line 4. Japanese trains are scheduled to operate on the new route, enhancing cooperation in transport infrastructure.

Japanese trains will pass near the Grand Egyptian Museum, which was also constructed in collaboration with Japan. The metro project reflects the depth of strategic ties between the two nations.
