SCA Chairman: Suez Canal operations continue despite dredger incident

Navigation through the Suez Canal remains regular in both directions despite the sinking of the drill rig "ADMARINE 12" in the Gulf of Suez, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) chairman said Wednesday.

Admiral Osama Rabie confirmed that the incident, which occurred off Gabal El-Zeit at the entrance of the Gulf of Suez, approximately 130 nautical miles from the canal's southern entrance, has not impacted canal traffic. The sinking happened outside the Suez Canal's navigational course, he emphasized in a reassuring statement.

Rabie added that the SCA's Crisis and Disaster Management Center is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with external parties, as part of its role in managing incidents outside the waterway.

He affirmed the SCA's readiness to assist relevant authorities if needed, highlighting the authority's comprehensive system of skilled maritime professionals, extensive experience in marine rescue, and specialized units for rescue, navigation security, and pollution control.

On Wednesday, 33 vessels are transiting the Suez Canal in both directions, with a total net tonnage of 1.4 million tons, according to the SCA.
