Al-Mashat: Nuclear energy strategic pillar for Africa’s sustainable future

Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, advocated for the expansion of nuclear energy in Africa during a high-level session at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Thursday.

Speaking alongside international leaders including IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and South Africa’s Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Mashat emphasized that nuclear power is a vital, low-emission source essential for a just energy transition across the continent.

Mashat stated that Egypt is pursuing an integrated vision to diversify its energy mix, aiming to increase the share of renewable energy to 42% by 2030 and boost the energy sector's contribution to GDP to 9.5%.

The Minister showcased the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant as a blueprint for national and continental development. She described the project not merely as a power generation site but as an economic engine designed to generate thousands of specialized employment opportunities, build a local industrial and service base to support advanced nuclear technology, and to provide a reliable baseload of electricity to complement intermittent solar and wind power.
