Egypt grants new gas exploration rights, eyes foreign investment

Egypt has awarded six new oil and gas exploration blocks to international companies, anticipating at least $245 million in new investments and the drilling of 13 wells, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced Wednesday. The move is part of Egypt's strategy to attract fresh investment in exploration and boost national production.

The Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) assigned four offshore blocks in the Mediterranean Sea, initially offered in the 2024 global bid round through Egypt's Exploration & Production Gateway. Additionally, two onshore blocks were awarded in the Nile Delta and North Sinai.

The awarded concessions and their planned activities include:

North Simian Offshore and North West Atoll Offshore: Awarded to a consortium of Chevron Egypt and BG (Shell), with plans for two exploration wells in each block.

North Ras El Tin Offshore: Awarded to IEOC Production (ENI), which intends to drill three exploration wells.

East Alexandria Offshore: Awarded to Cairon Egypt, with three exploration wells planned.

North Tanta Onshore (Nile Delta): Awarded to IPR, which plans to drill two exploration wells.

Al-Fayrouz Onshore (North Sinai): Awarded to Brinko, which will conduct a 3D seismic survey and drill one exploration well.

Egypt continues to offer diverse investment opportunities through its Exploration & Production Gateway (EUG), including undeveloped offshore fields in the Mediterranean. The bidding period for these areas is scheduled to close on July 2, 2025, with results to be announced after the bidding concludes and offers are received.
