Housing Minister outlines vision for Khedivial Cairo revitalization

The Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, convened a meeting to monitor the progress of the revitalization projects in Khedivial Cairo and to examine several proposed master plans for pedestrian walkways in the downtown area. The meeting included the participation of officials from the Ministry, the New Urban Communities Authority, the Arab Contractors Company, and the project's consultant.

At the outset of the meeting, Minister El-Sherbiny underscored the state's vision for the optimal exploitation of the Khedivial Cairo district, given the current restoration initiatives. The objective is to safeguard this area, renowned for its unique urban character and remarkable architectural and artistic features. He noted that efforts are underway to conserve the architectural legacy of these structures and integrate them into the tourist itinerary to maximize their value, all within the state's broader strategy to showcase Cairo's historical landmarks and reinstate its historical prominence.

The meeting addressed the suggested components for the downtown walkway projects, focusing on their adaptation for pedestrian use and site arrangement elements, such as lighting fixtures, landscaping, paving, and other features. Furthermore, the executive status of the remaining tasks in the project to develop and rehabilitate the historic Azbakeya Garden, as part of the Khedivial Cairo endeavours, was reviewed. This aims to reinstate the garden's heritage elements, including the preservation of historic trees and the Al-Tabba hill, and the renovation of the Crown Pergola, the historic fountain, and the Al-Selah Market Club. The progress of the development and restoration of the Opera Garage building was also discussed, all while maintaining the distinctive architectural style of the downtown area.

Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny instructed to accelerate the project schedules and establish a detailed implementation plan for all outstanding works. He emphasized the importance of regular monitoring of all these projects and coordination with relevant entities to ensure their timely completion.
