Omar Hisham: Egypt marks international golf return with new world championships

Omar Hisham, President of the Egyptian Golf Federation, announced a series of major tournaments to be organized in the coming period. He considers this move the start of a new era that will restore Egypt's prestigious standing in the global golf arena.

Speaking at a press conference held at the historic Mena House Golf Course, Hisham stated: "We chose to make this announcement from the heart of the Pyramids because this location symbolizes heritage and antiquity, much like the history of golf in Egypt. We possess a legacy stretching back more than a century, positioning us among the oldest nations globally to have played this sport."

The Federation President then outlined the championship calendar, starting with the 104th Egyptian Open Amateur Championship for Men at Dreamland Golf Club. This event will feature the introduction of a dedicated competition for senior players for the very first time. Continuing its focus on development, the Federation will also host the Egyptian Open Junior and Women’s Amateur Championships at New Giza Golf Club.

Hisham then announced the third major initiative: the return of the Egyptian Open after a 15-year absence. This historic tournament, dating back to 1921, will rejoin the Asian Development Tour with a $125,000 prize purse. The Federation is also set to launch an entirely new international tournament on the Asian Tour. This championship aims to draw top global players and propel Egypt to the forefront of the international sporting landscape.

The president highlighted the tangible accomplishments of the past year: "We successfully increased our player base by 25% and organized the Arab Junior and Women’s Championship at Madinaty Golf Club. This event was broadcast globally, proving our capability to host championships to international standards."

He underscored that these successes wouldn't have been possible without official backing: "The Ministry of Youth and Sports believed in our vision from day one, and their support was fundamental. Moreover, our partnerships with the Arab Golf Federation and the Asian Tour significantly enhance Egypt's regional standing in both the Arab and African contexts."

He noted that the tournaments' impact extends beyond athletics, asserting that golf tourism provides Egypt with a unique competitive edge. This benefit is rooted in the nation's combination of international-standard courses, year-round sunshine, and unique historical sites. He emphasized that every tournament hosted promotes Egypt globally and supports the objectives of Egypt’s Vision 2030.

Hisham wrapped up his address by confirming that the Federation's ultimate goal is to pave the way for Egyptian players to launch onto the global stage. "Every tournament grants our players international experience and improved rankings, which brings them closer to Olympic participation. We aim for Egypt's name to be a powerful presence on the global golf map," he stated.
