El-Sisi pledges to remove obstacles for Scatec, Sungrow

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met on Sunday with Terje Pilskog, CEO of Norway's Scatec, and Ko Rencian, president and founder of China's Sungrow Group, according to a statement from the presidency.

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Dr. Moustafa Madbouly, Minister of Transport and Industrial Development Engineer Kamel Al-Wazir, and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Engineer Mahmoud Esmat.

Presidential spokesman Ambassador Mohamed El-Shenawy said President Sisi welcomed the two CEOs and praised the cooperation between Egypt and the two companies. The President emphasized the importance of this collaboration in boosting foreign direct investment, creating jobs in the renewable energy sector, and cementing Egypt's position as a regional energy hub in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Pilskog reviewed Scatec's efforts in providing clean energy and green fuels globally, as well as its current cooperation with the Egyptian government. He noted the increasing number and scale of solar, wind, and green hydrogen projects in Egypt. Scatec's projects are among the most successful within the energy axis of Egypt's Presidential Initiative for Climate Action, the NWFE program. Scatec's investment portfolio under the NWFE program's energy axis is valued at $3.6 billion. Key projects include the Obelisk solar power plant in Nag Hammadi, a 1 GW solar power plant with 200 MWh of battery storage for Egyptalum, the Egypt Green Hydrogen project in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, the Ras Shokeir wind farm, and a green ammonia project in Damietta.

For his part, Ko Rencian showcased Sungrow's efforts in producing power plant components and manufacturing energy storage batteries. He discussed the ongoing cooperation to establish a 10 GW-per-year energy storage battery factory in Egypt. Rencian expressed Sungrow's readiness to localize this industry in Egypt, leveraging the country's infrastructure and components for new and renewable energy.

El-Shenawy added that the meeting also explored trilateral cooperation opportunities between the Egyptian state, Scatec, and Sungrow. Both companies expressed their appreciation for Egypt's efforts to facilitate their investments, which aligns with the country's vision of becoming a producer and exporter of green energy.

In this context, Sisi stressed the need to maximize cooperation with Scatec and Sungrow to benefit from the state's policy of localizing industry and boosting high-quality production, while also removing any obstacles the two companies may face in Egypt.
