Abdelatty, Badawi discuss linking Cypriot gas fields to Egypt

Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi met on Friday with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, under the directives of the President of the Republic, during a bilateral visit to Cyprus.

Abdelatty conveyed the President’s greetings to his Cypriot counterpart, affirming the shared commitment to strengthening the close relations between the two friendly nations. He expressed appreciation for the progress achieved in bilateral ties across all fields and stressed Egypt’s keenness to elevate relations to broader horizons, particularly by enhancing economic and trade cooperation and increasing the volume of trade exchange. He welcomed Cyprus’s support for Egypt within the European Union on various issues, voicing hope for continued backing, especially as Cyprus prepares to assume the EU presidency in early 2026.

The Foreign Minister underlined the importance of strengthening energy cooperation, including the integration of Cypriot gas fields with Egypt in line with agreements signed in Cairo earlier this year in the presence of the Cypriot President, alongside the implementation of the electricity interconnection project.

He further praised cooperation under the trilateral mechanism with Cyprus and Greece, emphasizing the shared benefits it provides to the three nations.

Badawi reviewed the latest developments in joint projects aimed at linking Cypriot gas fields to Egyptian facilities, enhancing energy security in both countries, and supporting regional efforts to maximize natural gas resources. He stressed that cooperation between Egypt and Cyprus represents a successful model of regional partnership in natural gas, particularly in light of Egypt’s advanced infrastructure, including liquefaction plants and transport networks, which enable economic integration and the optimal use of discovered resources.

President Christodoulides extended his greetings to the President of the Republic, expressing pride in the strong relations binding the two countries and affirming that Egypt remains a cornerstone of stability in the Middle East.
