Farouk launches intensified campaigns to crack down on feed hoarders

Alaa Farouk, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, has instructed the intensification of surprise inspections on warehouses and silos storing feed raw materials, vehicles transporting and handling feed, and shops trading in feed nationwide. The move, coordinated with all relevant regulatory authorities, aims to curb hoarding practices intended to create shortages and drive up prices.

The minister said the campaigns form part of the state’s efforts to regulate and stabilize the feed market, particularly after the recent unjustified price hikes, while also protecting and supporting producers.

He noted that joint committees have been formed, comprising representatives from the Ministry’s Livestock and Poultry Development Sector, the Supply Investigations Department, the Water Police, the Competition Protection and Anti-Monopoly Authority, the Consumer Protection Agency, as well as officials from agriculture and supply directorates. These committees will carry out inspections of warehouses, silos, transport vehicles, and outlets dealing in feed and raw materials.

According to the ministry, several inspections already conducted following the minister’s directives uncovered violations including selling feed at inflated prices, trading without invoices or official documents, and hoarding feed and raw materials to restrict supply and raise prices.

Dr. Tarek Soliman, Head of the Livestock and Poultry Development Sector, said all violators had been referred to the Public Prosecution for legal action, in line with laws designed to protect consumers and safeguard food security.

He added that the inspection campaigns will continue on a regular basis to ensure feed availability at fair prices and to protect the livestock and poultry sectors. He also urged breeders and producers to purchase feed only from licensed factories approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, and to ensure that feed mixtures are registered and certified. Producers are encouraged to report violations by contacting the sector at 0220541463 / 0220541464.
