Cabinet: El Alamein lakes to use desalinated seawater, not Nile

The Egyptian Cabinet's media center has refuted recent social media claims alleging the use of Nile River water to fill the artificial lakes of the "Downtown Lagoon" project in New Alamein City. The project features 11 man-made lakes.

The media center affirmed that all of the project's lakes will be filled exclusively with desalinated seawater, with no use of Nile River water. This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance the tourism and urban infrastructure of Egypt's North Coast, aiming to transform it into a global destination for tourism, residency, and logistics.

Authorities have already commenced the trial filling of the project's main and largest lake to test the efficiency of its insulation system. This marks the first of the 11 lakes to undergo trial operation. The ambitious project also includes islands, a recreational tourist promenade, and dedicated paths for pedestrians, bicycles, and electric vehicles, alongside various developmental, service, tourism, and hotel activities, many of which are being implemented for the first time in Egypt.
