El-Sherbiny reviews urban, green building plans

Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny recently chaired a key meeting to advance the National Strategy for Green and Sustainable Urbanization and Construction, first unveiled last November. The meeting, attended by top ministry officials and representatives from the New Urban Communities Authority, focused on accelerating the strategy's practical implementation.

The strategy aims to transition Egypt towards more efficient and sustainable urban development, improving quality of life and promoting responsible resource management. Minister El-Sherbiny stressed that this initiative is crucial for achieving sustainable development and fostering a green economy. He called for a comprehensive implementation plan, detailing technical, legislative, and regulatory frameworks to ensure rapid execution and broad impact across all urban communities.

The meeting highlighted the strategic objectives of the green building system, including boosting green real estate projects as a major source of national income, strengthening green finance and urban sustainability, improving energy, water, and resource efficiency in cities, supporting sustainable urban growth through education and governance, and building adaptable, green, and sustainable cities.

A significant focus was placed on a new package of incentives for real estate developers and beneficiaries. These incentives, crafted after extensive international and local research, include financial incentives such as tax exemptions and reductions, and financing facilities, as well as non-financial incentives like simplified procedures, priority land allocation, and the granting of accredited environmental certificates and ratings.

These incentives will apply to a range of projects, including private sector integrated developments, government and service buildings, new and existing residential buildings, and the upgrade of current projects.

Engineer El-Sherbiny concluded by directing teams to finalize a detailed implementation plan, complete with a clear timeline, monitoring mechanisms, and the attractive incentives for developers. This paves the way for the official announcement of the strategy's full details, its implementation date, and upcoming technical workshops.
