Sisi discusses energy strategy, renewables with top officials

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Tuesday met with Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly and Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat to discuss advancements in the energy strategy, focusing on renewable energy integration and grid efficiency.

Presidential spokesperson Ambassador Mohamed El-Shenawy stated that discussions centered on the Electricity Ministry's action plan, particularly regarding the energy mix, the use of renewables and battery storage, and efforts to boost energy quality, efficiency, and conservation. The talks also covered the economic operation of power plants to save fuel and enhance the national electricity grid through interconnection projects and reinforcing the transmission network to integrate new capacities.

El-Shenawy added that the minister reviewed measures to improve services, including coordinating with the petroleum ministry to secure fuel for power plants, overseeing maintenance, combating electricity theft, and reducing grid losses. He noted the addition of approximately 2,000 megawatts of renewable energy capacity with investments around $2.3 billion.

Efforts to localize the manufacturing of electricity and renewable energy equipment were also highlighted, with a focus on coordinating with major foreign companies to produce storage batteries and wind turbines in Egypt.

The Minister detailed plans to reinforce the national grid to accommodate renewable energy. Currently, Egypt's installed renewable energy capacity, including wind, solar, and hydropower, totals 8,031 megawatts.

The meeting also reviewed estimated renewable energy capacities for 2030, in line with Egypt's integrated and sustainable energy strategy, and projected solar and wind capacities expected to join the grid by June 2028.

Discussions further included increasing energy efficiency in generation plants, savings from operational changes, and progress on the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant project. The 3,000-megawatt Egyptian-Saudi electrical interconnection project, valued at approximately $1.8 billion, and efforts to implement the Egyptian-Greek interconnection project were also reviewed.

Sisi underscored the need to intensify government efforts to attract investments in the renewable energy sector, ensure sustainable supplies to the national grid and industrial sectors, and accelerate ongoing projects to enhance energy system efficiency. He also called for continued improvements in electricity services nationwide, modernizing generation plants, transmission and distribution networks, and control centers to accommodate rising consumption, while emphasizing the localization of renewable energy-related industries.
