Five giant quay cranes arrive at Damietta Port's Tahya Misr Terminal

Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel El Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, announced that Damietta Port has welcomed the vessel ZHEN HUA 33 from China. Onboard are five giant STS quay cranes, designated for operation at the berths of the Tahya Misr 1 container terminal.

This delivery is part of the ongoing completion of the superstructure works being carried out by Damietta Alliance Container Terminals, the terminal operator, in preparation for its imminent opening and operation.

This batch of cranes is part of a plan to equip the terminal with the latest global operating systems and continues the terminal's preparation. With this delivery, 12 giant STS quay cranes have now arrived, adding to the seven previously delivered. All cranes are the latest models from HHMC, a leading Chinese manufacturer of modern port equipment.

These cranes offer high operational capabilities, with a lifting capacity of up to 75 tons and an outreach of 57.5 meters from the quay surface. This allows them to efficiently handle mega-vessels, managing up to 11 containers high. Their 72-meter outer boom length enables them to handle the widest container ships, significantly enhancing the port's capacity for the latest global container vessels.

The new cranes also feature the latest advanced safety systems, including sensors, cameras, and protection systems for secure loading and unloading. They integrate with smart port management systems, enabling real-time operational monitoring and ensuring peak efficiency and coordination across terminal departments.

In parallel, 30 out of 40 planned RTG yard cranes have been delivered. These environmentally friendly cranes, standing 21 meters high, support a dual power system (electricity or diesel), enhancing operational flexibility. They were manufactured by Genma-Kalmar, a global leader in advanced handling equipment.

The Tahya Misr 1 container terminal project is a major national undertaking at Damietta Port. Its berths span 1,970 meters with an 18-meter depth, and it boasts a 922,000 square meter back-up yard capable of handling up to 3.5 million TEUs.

Damietta Alliance Container Terminals, a consortium of Germany's Eurogate, Italy's Contship, and Hapag-Lloyd, will operate the terminal to the latest international standards. This move solidifies Damietta Port's standing as a fully integrated logistics hub in the region.

This vital project aligns with the Ministry of Transport's plan, mandated by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, to develop Egyptian ports into a regional hub for transport, logistics, and transit trade. Its execution is also part of the integrated logistics corridor (Tanta – Mansoura – Damietta), aiming to bolster the national economy and enhance the global standing of Egyptian ports. This is achieved by increasing operational efficiency, reducing waiting times, and improving competitiveness to accommodate new generations of mega-ships.
