Engineer Mohamed Elewa, Director of the "Green Sharm" project under the Ministry of Environment, has shed light on the compelling reasons behind Sharm El-Sheikh's successful integration into the ICLEI network and the significant advantages it anticipates.
He explained that the Egyptian government, spearheaded by
the Ministry of Environment and in collaboration with international
organizations, has been diligently executing a multitude of environmental and
social sustainable development initiatives. A cornerstone of these efforts is
the "Green Sharm" project. This ambitious undertaking is dedicated to
transforming Sharm El-Sheikh into Egypt's inaugural green and sustainable
tourist destination. The project achieves this by implementing a holistic
sustainable development strategy for the city, with a keen focus on reducing
carbon emissions and preserving natural resources.
Elewa underscored the pivotal projects driving sustainable
development in Sharm El-Sheikh. In new and renewable energy, projects
generating 51 megawatts of renewable energy have been completed, meeting 18% of
the city's needs.
A comprehensive system for integrated municipal solid waste management has also been implemented. For transportation, a system to encourage cycling includes 145 kilometers of dedicated bike paths and a bike-sharing system. Additionally, a sustainable transport system utilizing electric buses has been introduced to eliminate carbon emissions. Furthermore, there are ongoing projects and an executive plan for biodiversity conservation.
Elewa highlighted the benefits of Sharm El Sheikh joining
the ICLEI global network. These include leveraging shared success stories,
achievements, and local green initiatives from other cities, especially in the
Arab region and Africa. Membership will also help the city's local council
achieve its sustainability goals through ICLEI's tools, frameworks, and
support, and facilitate the implementation of Sharm El Sheikh's sustainable
development plans via technical assistance.
Furthermore, joining the ICLEI network aims to boost the
city's participation in relevant international events, conferences, platforms,
and discussions to foster knowledge exchange, facilitate collaboration, and
enhance its marketing position as a sustainable tourism destination. The city
will also gain access to specialized tools, frameworks, and guidance to develop
and achieve its sustainability objectives.
It's worth noting that the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) is a global network working with over 2,500 local and regional governments committed to sustainable urban development. Operating in over 125 countries, the network influences sustainability policies and drives local action to achieve emission-free, nature-based, equitable, resilient, and circular development.
