El-Sisi Calls for accountability over recent gasoline crisis

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with Prime Minister Dr. Moustafa Madbouly and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi on Thursday.

Presidential Spokesperson Ambassador Mohamed El-Shenawy stated that the meeting addressed efforts to meet citizens' petroleum needs and the status of petroleum exploration and reserves. The Minister of Petroleum highlighted the new oil and gas discoveries made between July 2024 and May 2025.

In this regard, El-Sisi stressed the need to take all necessary measures in advance to ensure the stability of the power supply, meet the needs of the electricity sector, and maintain the electrical grid to ensure readiness and stability of the power supply nationwide.

El-Shenawy added that the meeting also addressed the status of oil and gas contracts, efforts to increase domestic production of petroleum and gas, seismic survey activities in various Egyptian regions, exploration plans, and developments in the activities of international companies operating in the oil and gas sectors in Egypt. The meeting also discussed the necessary steps to expand regional cooperation in the oil and gas sectors in the coming period, as well as the status of the payment of dues to international companies. The President directed intensified efforts to ensure these dues are paid.

He indicated that the meeting also addressed the recent gasoline problem. The Minister of Petroleum confirmed that the issue was addressed immediately, and that legal and administrative measures were being taken against those responsible.

For his part, the President stressed the need to hold those responsible for the problem accountable and take the necessary measures to ensure it does not recur.

The official spokesperson explained that the meeting also addressed developments in the mining and mineral resources sector, including amending the law of the Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority to ensure optimal exploitation of mineral resources, and undertaking a comprehensive update of its organizational structure. This will facilitate licensing procedures to attract international mining companies, thus maximizing the state's resources and localizing the mining industry in Egypt. In this regard, the Minister of Petroleum reviewed the efforts made by the state to create an attractive environment for investment in mining and mineral industries.

He stated that the President stressed the need for the state to continue its efforts to enhance local oil and gas production, which would contribute to meeting development and consumption needs and reducing the import bill. He also directed the continued development of newly discovered wells and their inclusion in the production map, in addition to intensifying research and exploration activities, which would lead to increased local oil and gas production, and providing incentives to accelerate and intensify field development and production operations and conduct new explorations, in addition to continuing efforts to attract investments and overcome any obstacles facing investors in Egypt in the oil, gas and mining sectors.
