Alexandria Metro project's first phase sees progress

The Ministry of Transport today, Sunday, affirmed significant progress in the implementation of the first phase of the Alexandria metro project.

In a statement, the Ministry noted that the 21.7 km project extends from Abu Qir railway station to Misr (Egypt) station in Alexandria. This includes 6.5 km at ground level from Misr station to before El-Zaheria station, followed by 15.2 km elevated up to Abu Qir station, encompassing 20 stations: 6 at ground level and 14 elevated.

It added that girder installation for track bridges is underway, with girders already placed between Al-Mandra and Al-Asafra, Al-Asafra and Miami, Miami and Sidi Bishr, and Sidi Bishr and Mohamed Naguib stations. Girder installation is ongoing between Al-Mandra and Al-Montazah stations, as well as in the manoeuvering area before Abu Qir station. Piling and column works for the elevated track of the remaining project are also in progress.

The Ministry stated that foundation work (piling, bases, and columns) is also advancing for Tosson, Al-Asafra, and Kafr Abdo stations. Work has commenced at the remaining stations. Furthermore, leveling, excavation, backfilling, and fencing are progressing at the project's workshops in Abu Qir and Kafr Abdo, and work on the heavy maintenance workshop building has begun at the Kafr Abdo workshop.

The Ministry mentioned that the project will be a significant qualitative leap for green, sustainable, and environmentally friendly mass transportation in Alexandria, contributing to the targeted rapid economic and social development of Alexandria Governorate.

It added that the project aims to ensure the safe operation of the line, particularly after eliminating level crossings, numerous illegal crossings, and traffic intersections. It also aims to accommodate increasing traffic and trips, reduce traffic congestion in Alexandria, and lower fuel consumption through its reliance on clean electric power.

The Ministry continued that the project also aims to increase the maximum passenger capacity from 2,850 to 60,000 passengers/hour/direction, reduce travel time from 50 to 25 minutes, increase operating speed from 25 to 100 km/hour, and achieve a shorter headway from 10 to 2.5 minutes.

The line will also facilitate passenger transfer with the Cairo/Alexandria railway line at Misr station, with both the Cairo/Alexandria railway line and the Raml Tram at Sidi Gaber station, with the Raml Tram at Victoria station, and with the Rashid railway line at Al-Maamoura station.
