The Korea Transportation Safety Authority reported that 5.12 million units from 1,684 models were recalled due to defects, exceeding the previous record of 3.25 million in 2022. Hyundai Motor Company and Kia accounted for a substantial 79.2% of these recalls, totaling 4.07 million units. This significant increase is attributed to numerous manufacturing defects found in popular models.
The figure surpasses the 1.69
million units recalled last year and also smashes the previous record of 3.25
million units set in 2022, according to Yonhap news agency.
Electric vehicles also saw a
significant surge this year, with over 1.2 million units recalled, surpassing
the 707,100 units in 2021 and 187,560 units in 2020.
A notable instance was Hyundai and Kia's voluntary recall of approximately 170,000 electric vehicles in March to address a software error, one of the largest single recalls for electric vehicles to date.
